socialite, complained to the fbi that she was receiving harassing e-mails from an anonymous sender. she registered the complaint this past summer. the fbi investigated and in the process discovered the sender was paula broadwell. and that also broadwell had an affair with petraeus. the e-mails to kelley stemmed from broadwell's apparent jealousy of kelley's relationship with petraeus. there is no evidence that kelley had an affair with petraeus. the kelley family acknowledged that they were friendly with the petraeus family. by late october, under questioning from the fbi, both petraeus and broadwell had admitted to the affair. on november 6th, election day, the fbi notified the director of national intelligence, james clapper, of the affair. clapper advised petraeus to step down, and within days, petraeus did. question, is there more to this affair than meets the eye? pat buchanan. >> i don't think there's a great deal more than what we already know, john. a lot of people are attacking the fbi for investigating those harassing e-mails running to the source but once the fbi did and they

affair came to light after this woman, 37- year-old jill kelley complained to a friend, an fbi agent. that would be this person here, that she was receiving threatening e-mails, reportedly from broadwell launching an investigation, and that put the lid on this. general john allen, a top commander in afghanistan, the man who took petraeus' place is now being investigated. seems when the fbi was looking into those e-mails, they also found 20 to 30,000 pages of back and forth between jill kelley and allen. some say they're potentially inappropriate, maybe even crossing the line. some say that other than a dear or a sweetheart, there's nothing going on. in another twist, remember that fbi agent, the one who started looking into the threatening e- mails? he's apparently now being investigated for sending shirtless pictures via e-mail over to kelley. he's now off the case. this is jill kelley's twin sister. what does she have to do with it? she's going through a nasty custody battle right now and allegedly both petraeus and allen wrote letters on her behalf. full circle, back to broadwell.

revelations tonight in the sudden resignation of cis director. he stepped down yesterday amid an fbi probe on harassing e- mails. the washington post reports senior law enforcement officials say the investigation was triggered when a woman with whom he was having an affair sent threatening e-mails to another woman close to him. the recipient of those e-mails went to the fbi for protection and help in tracking down the sender of those e-mails. that person turned out to be paula broadwell according to the post. the identity of the woman who received those e-mails was not discharged and her relationship to petraeus is unknown. broadwell is unavailable for comments since his sudden resignation of cia director this week. the former cia director had this reaction. >> i don't think it affects the institution. obviously it will have an emotional affect, but in terms of the agency doing its job, no, not at all. with regard to general petraeus's career, history many judge that and history wi judge his tremendous contribution to american security over his entire career. >> the broadwell is marr

means. >> reporter: exactly. sure, 's been a tough few days for general allen since the fbi probe implicated him. some defensive issues with the pentagon told us that these e- mails were flirtatious and we've been turned over to the inspector general. they came from the fbi and the implication is there was no suggestion of any criminal conduct, but you might have some uniform code of military justice violations like conduct unbecoming of an officer or service discrediting or adultery. these are all crimes under the military code before you make it sound as though allen could be in danger of more than just losing his promotion. he could be in the same kind of trouble as four-star general petraeus. >> perhaps more so herself because he's still an active duty officer and subject to the uniform code of military justice. so i think based on my conversations with the pentagon today, that is where the investigation is leading at this point. >> a lot of people are wondering whether or not this is just a one off, an out liar or is this -- outlier or a window into what goes on all the time
